From the window of an airliner, the steep eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range appear to form an enormous elevated bowl, nearly overflowing with the deep blue water of Lake Tahoe.

Notice the distance between Lake Tahoe and Carson City. By air, it is about a 9-mile span, but the elevation difference is nearly 1,500 feet. The resulting image is stunning; an alpine sea hanging suspended over the glittering resort cities, the state capital, and the towns of Minden and Gardnerville, which are almost directly below it.

Of course, that is just one of the stunning images in the Reno-Tahoe Territory. It was created by the Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT) in 1984 to promote tourism to the region. Encompassing the Reno/Sparks, Carson City, Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe, and Virginia City areas, the Reno-Tahoe Territory reflects logical geographical identification and traffic patterns.
